Estrogen dominance is a type of hormonal imbalance in which the body produces too much estrogen, and can cause a wide array of unpleasant symptoms.

What Causes Estrogen Dominance?

There are a variety of factors that can disrupt our hormones and cause our bodies to create more estrogen, including stress, environmental toxins, the state of our liver and gut health, our progesterone levels, the foods we eat, how much sleep we get, and other lifestyle factors.

Common Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance in Women include:

  • Weight gain (particularly in hips, midsection, thighs)
  • Heavy or light periods
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Fatigue
  • Fibroids in the uterus: benign growths that become a problem all their own
  • Fibrocystic lumps in breasts
  • Low sex drive
  • Bloating
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Insomnia
  • Hair loss
  • Breast, ovarian or cervical cancer

If this sounds like you, don’t be discouraged! There are many options to solve hormonal imbalances.

The first and most important step is to work with your functional health practitioner to determine WHY your estrogen is high or out of balance. The most effective way to do this is with functional hormone estrogen lab testing.

How to Stabilize Your Estrogen Levels

There are many natural ways to help support your body in reversing estrogen dominance.

Eat More Cruciferous Vegetables

Eat clean food and increase your intake of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, arugula, bok choy, cauliflower etc. These super foods contain properties that assist with the metabolism and proper breakdown of estrogen.

Reduce Stress

Reducing stress allows the body to focus more on balancing hormones and less on “fight or flight.”

Limit Alcohol

Limit or stop drinking alcohol all together.  Alcohol changes the way the body metabolizes estrogen causing the hormone to build up.

Avoid Toxins

Do your best to avoid toxins that mimic estrogen in the body, such as synthetic fragrances, plastics, and chemicals like parabens in beauty products.

Supplements that Help SUPPORT Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen metabolism ultimately processes through our liver and our gut. There are some wonderful supplements that support this as well.
