Although the number of people with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) remains unknown, studies on this highly misunderstood and often unknown condition suggests that between 6-15% of healthy people have it, while up to 80% of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have developed this illness. The stats suggest you may be dealing with a high number of bacteria wreaking havoc on your gut as we speak.
Symptoms of SIBO include any or all of the following:
- Primary SIBO Symptoms: IBS, IBD, Gas, Bloating, Nausea, Abdominal Pain, Diarrhea and/or Constipation, GERD (Reflux), Nutrient deficiencies
- Secondary SIBO Symptoms: Autoimmune disease symptom flares, Joint Pain, Headaches, Neuralgia, Hair loss, Inability to gain or lose weight, Hormone Imbalances (Hypothyroid, Infertility, Amenorrhea, Endometriosis)
Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO as it’s commonly known is a condition in which a person has an unusually large and imbalanced population of bacteria in the small intestine. The high number of imbalanced bacteria (aka Dysbiosis) creates a problem in digestion and absorption of food and can ultimately cause serious damage to the small intestine (Leaky Gut) and profound symptoms. The number one cause for this overgrowth is post infectious gastroenteritis – Food poisoning. There are a number of reasons why someone might acquire this condition; a person may have an autoimmune disease or an underlying chronic illness to consider. However, the most common cause might be the result of a diet high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, and Alcohol.
Living with SIBO poses a challenge to sufferers as they navigate life with a debilitating condition.
