Many people are aware of the use of Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) to treat diabetes and help people lose weight. As a reminder, GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the intestines that plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism, appetite regulation, and gut health. Its primary function is to enhance insulin secretion in response to meals, but recent research has unveiled its significant impact on gut healing and overall gastrointestinal health, namely helping heal leaky gut!

What is Leaky Gut?

Leaky gut refers to the increased intestinal lining permeability. When intact, this protective layer in our gut normally allows nutrients to be absorbed into our body but prevents toxins or harmful particles from entering our system. If it is “leaky” there is decreased protection from these toxins and our entire body is exposed – allowing for inflammation and disease to progress. Yikes! Now that we know how important gut health is, let’s discuss how GLP-1 provides support to our system.

How GLP-1 Provides Support for Leaky Gut

Enhances Mucosal Integrity

GLP-1 works to enhance mucosal integrity, meaning it promotes the integrity of the intestinal mucosa (the moist, inner lining of some organs and body cavities such as the nose, mouth, lungs, and stomach) by stimulating the production of mucus and increasing the productivity of intestinal epithelial cells.

Halts Chronic Inflammation

On account of how GLP-1 supports the intestinal barrier, it also helps heal leaky gut by halting the chronic inflammation in the gut that can lead to various gastrointestinal disorders. GLP-1 has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (signaling proteins that help control inflammation in your body). This action helps to alleviate conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other gut-related inflammatory issues.

Improves Gut Mobility

GLP-1 influences gut motility, which is essential for the proper passage of food and waste through the digestive system. By regulating the contractions of the gastrointestinal tract, GLP-1 can help prevent issues like constipation and improve overall gut function.

Fosters a Balanced Microbiome

Emerging research also suggests that GLP-1 may positively influence the gut microbiome, the community of microorganisms residing in the intestines. A healthy microbiome is essential for digestion, immune function, and the prevention of diseases. GLP-1 may help foster a balanced microbiome, enhancing gut health!

Now that we understand the science of GLP-1 and how it benefits the gut, we see it is more than just a glucose-regulating and weight loss supporting hormone. GLP-1 plays a vital role in maintaining gut health and integrity. As Functional Medicine providers, we know and appreciate the importance of gut health in overall well-being, so the use of GLP-1 can definitely be considered another tool in promoting root-based health!
